FAQ's - Kerry Freeman

1. What Kind Of Photographer Are You?

I am lifestyle portrait photographer who loves engaging and photographing kids of all ages and stages from newborn to ninety-nine. I believe there is nothing more beautiful than the love and connection that binds families together – what a joy it is to draw that out, capturing the delightful uniqueness of each member in images that you can treasure for a lifetime.

2. Where Will My Session Be Held?

We will plan the location together, based on what is meaningful to you and suits you and yours best. For families a beautiful outdoor setting can be the most fun and relaxing. You may have a special setting in mind, and I can also offer several locations that work well. I also offer the simplicity studio sessions with beautiful lighting in my home studio, which we can consider if you prefer a studio setting.

3. How Long Will My Session Be?

The sessions are normally an hour or less.   My goal is to make your experience fast, relaxing and fun for your family. Expect plenty of movement, guidance, communication and silliness.

4. What Will My Session Be Like?

We will meet at the agreed upon time and place and spend a few minutes getting acquainted with everyone. I usually begin with the whole group with a variety of poses and interactions. Then we will quickly transition into combinations of family members – kids together, kids single, mother/child and children, father/child and children, the couple, and then wrap up with some action, candids and fun interactions depending on personalities and interests.

5. Where Will My Newborn Session Be Held?

Newborn sessions are usually held in my home studio.

6. What Should I Wear?

Think Comfortable! Coordinated! Classic!

COMFORTABLE!

Kids and Adults too are more relaxed when they are comfortable and feeling good about themselves. It is especially important for a photo session when we will be moving around.

COORDINATED!

Start by looking at your home décor!  Do you like bright colors? Neutrals? Since you may incorporating these portraits in your home décor you may want to consider having the colors of your clothes complement the color scheme of your home.

Limit patterns. It can work well to have one outfit in the mix that has all the colors in it. However, not everyone in the photo should wear patterns as it will  distract from the final image.

Limit Colors. Start with colors that coordinate well. I suggest selecting a two main colors and then add softer hues to accent and complete your color scheme.

Location Considerations. Are you going to be on the beach where there are plenty of neutral tones, or under a tree surrounded by bright fall foliage? Select a color palette for your outfits that will complement the setting and not compete with it.

Say Probably Not To Characters And Large Logos. Characters and prominent logos on clothing can be distracting in an image. But remember rules are made to be broken, if your child is set on wearing a character item, at the very least bring it along and we will plan on making it the focal point of a a little fun at the end of our session.

Textures And Layers Are Your Friend.  In photographs textures and layers are a wonderful element.  Consider incorporating scarves, vests, hats or belts if you enjoy them.

Start With Your Closets. Have a little fun pulling out and coordinating items for each person that will work well with one another and go great with your décor.

It often helps to lay out each family member’s outfit together while planning so you can get a good idea about how the pieces will look next to each other. This will help you visualize what works well together. Plus, this way, you can make sure that you’re not missing any essential clothing items.

If it helps you to look at examples, Pinterest is a great source of wardrobe coordination and color scheme ideas for family portraits.

Be creative and have fun with it - but remember it is not so much about the clothes as it is about the connection, love, personality, beauty and memories that we will be capturing.

CLASSIC!

By choosing simple, classic clothes, your images will have a more timeless feel, and keep all eyes focused on you and your beautiful family.  We will be creating images that will be treasured by your family for generations to come.
